Where to buy online
Island Java Bag was born shortly after Jackie returned to Vancouver Island, when she found it difficult to find work that was flexible enough to accommodate for her son’s disabilities. Jackie chose to instead create her own small Eco-conscious business making a variety of hand bags and other accessories out of recycled items, mostly burlap coffee bean bags, retired zipline harnesses, and sheets.
She began by doing the Duncan Farmers’ Market in 2011, and in 2014 she received a Green Grant that helped propel her from her kitchen table start up to a full-time business!
Not only does she work with a variety of coffee roasters on the island, but she also works with Wild Play Element Parks to keep their retired zipline harnesses from the landfill and with hotels in Victoria to repurpose sheets that would otherwise be in the waste stream.
Her market bags, reusable produce/bulk food bags, purses, coffee cup and french press cozies, and other products, are now made from at least 80% repurposed, reused or up-cycled raw materials. In 2017 she kept just over 5,000 kgs out of the landfill. She strongly believes that one person can make a difference.
In just one year, Island Java Bag up-cycled or re-purposed the following materials:
– 2190 kg burlap coffee bean bags
– 780 (19.5 kg) foil coffee bags that had contained roasted coffee
– 521 (240 kg) retired zip line harnesses
– 140 malt bags from local breweries
– 120 (67kg) pairs of used jeans
How amazing is that?
Island Java Bag’s tagline has evolved over the years, but the core idea has always been the same; eco-friendly products for living a sustainable life.
Jackie is located in Duncan, B.C., on Vancouver Island.
